I write music and play saxophones and clarinets. Sometimes I sing and play guitar. Other times I make electronic music with a computer or without one. Right now my main projects are: Day in Pictures (modern jazz), Paper Gardens (chamber music) and White Blue Yellow and Clouds (early rock and doo-wop). I've been a part of the collaborative trio Memorize the Sky for 8 years, we are currently working on our third album. I am also greatful to play with varying degrees of frequency Zemog el Gallo Bueno, Exploding Star Orchestra, The Taylor Ho Bynum Sextet, Harris Eisenstadt's Canada Day Quintet, Positive Catastrophe, Jason Ajemian' s Joy Mega, The Seth Meicht Big Sound Ensemble, The New Jerk Times, Ghost Train Orchestra, The Bridesmaids, Neil Micheal Hagerty and the Howling Hex, Bright Black Morning Light, The Easy Star All Stars, The Sway Machinery, Fela! on Broadway.
I was working at an architecture firm where I was helping with an exhibition of models made by elementary school children. The models were proposals for a redesign of their schools garden. In a moment of inspiration I saw the basis and title of Paper Gardens. The brightly colored construction-paper models were wildly different from each other, playful and wonderfully imaginative. Some were only flowers on a bed of green, while others sported swing sets or skate ramps. When aligned in a grid, I was struck by how they suggested a path, despite the spaces between each model and their diversity. I set out to create my own musical gardens, and composed many blocks of various textures. Some were simple, while others were more complex, more like a playground, including improvisation and expansion. I then laid out the sections in a grid delineated by time and silence. As with the childrens garden models, I began to see a path that could lead them from one to the next.
