This project was generated organically out of their collaboration on the track "Aquatrium", which appeared on the Chimp Beams "Slowly" album, released on CD in Japan on Rudiments and a year later in the US on double vinyl on Concent Productions / Crosstalk. In 2011 Shing02 spent a few months in NYC during which time Chimp Beams wrote tracks for this new collaboration album. Shing02's lyrics are mostly about him being NYC with his friends, places he went to and his hang-outs, and also about Egypt where he was for few weeks in August 2011. The album was produced with Mari's MPC60 and vintage synth collection, while Yusuke's organic live instruments occupies the layers with Shing02's rap yielding some new directions for Chimp Beams.
Born in Tokyo, raised in Tanzania and England, Shing02 landed in California at the age of 15, and soon thereafter got involved in creating art, which was the first love. After a move to Berkeley for schooling he became immersed in the local hip hop scene which also nurtured dozens of creative acts. In '96 his music made its way back to Japan, partnered with Mr. Higo of Mary Joy Recordings, garnering tremendous support in his homeland. Over the course of his independent career, he has made the transition from sample-based music to live performances with a full band incorporating traditional instruments, while remaining true to his hip hop roots. As the inventor of the Vestax Faderboard, he also toured in the free-jazz trio, Kosmic Rennaisance.
Chimp Beams are Mari Ayabe, Yusuke Yamamoto, and K-go Mizutani, three Japanese ex-pats who operate out of Brooklyn, NY. Typically their CDs have been released in Japan through the Rudiments label, and the vinyl released on Mari Ayabe's Concent Productions label.
